Nikki’s Review of Stars Like Acid

Stars Like Acid by Marissa Lupe

Started: 9/9

Finished: 9/15

Back Jacket Synopsis: Téa, a Latina soldier in training, is used to standing her ground in a world that seems hellbent on bringing her to her knees. Orphaned at age five and held captive on a military base for most of her life, she barely remembers a time before the government controlled her every move.

Now, fifteen years later, the Earth is dying, a resistance is forming, and the corrupt government is hoarding resources and information that could save the world. When Téa is forced to marry the son of a terrifying general, she stumbles across a dark secret that could finally dismantle her power-hungry father-in-law's regime and offer her a chance at freedom.

Humans are evolving in dangerous and powerful ways, and Téa may be the most powerful one of them all.

Meanwhile, Annabelle, another of Earth's many orphans, has lived a mostly charmed life. That is if you don't count the fact that she's technically a prisoner. Drifting among the stars on Space Station Luna-the top-secret government lifeboat built to save Earth's ruling class-Annabelle has everything she needs and the woman she loves by her side.

But when Téa ends up at the space station, she unravels a web of deceptions that send both women reeling and make one thing perfectly clear: the secrets that connect Téa and Annabelle may be powerful enough to turn the tides of war, save the planet, and set the people free

Nikki’s Review: Marissa created an amazing story with a unique premise, loads of twists and turns, and plenty of diverse characters to root for along the way!

Things I loved:

  • I cared about the main characters from the second I met them in the story. Marissa did a great job creating interesting backstories and situations for the main female protagonists. I love a dual POV and the two voices were distinct and expertly intertwined. The way they came together at the end was my favorite part of the book.

  • The pacing was quick with lots of action at every turn. Marissa did a great job keeping the story moving forward with interesting plot points, but keeping it all grounded so that I could keep up.

  • The main characters are both minorities and there is LGBTQIA+ representation throughout the story.

  • The setting and the superpowers were ones that I would love to see on the silver screen. This would make a visually stunning movie!

  • There were some bigger themes at play here, and I really liked the message they represented.

  • The book cover is gorgeous, and so is the special art I received for pre-ordering. While supplies last, you can also receive these special gifts for pre-ordering Stars Like Acid before it releases on September 18th! That is just a few days from now so check out Marissa’s instagram for more details @mamarissabooks

Constructive Thoughts:

  • I loved the main two characters so much that I wanted even more of their interiority as they worked through their challenges!

Great quote from the book:

“You must believe in good. Only then can you see the beauty that the world still has to offer.”

“Movie” Rating: PG-13 for intense action sequences. There was romance throughout but it was not explicit.

Overall Recommendation: If you're an adult reader who loves books with action, romance, and strong female leads, you will love Stars Like Acid!

If you would like to pre-order Stars Like Acid and receive some special art and goodies from the author, hurry over to her instagram to see the details!
